Barn Quilt Community Art Project

  • Grantsville A&E District P.O. Box 633, Oakland, MD 21550 Oakland, MD 21550 USA (map)

In partnership with the Barn Quilt Association of Garrett County, Inc, the Grantsville A&E District will offer a community art project involving the production of two 4x4 barn quilts, which, when completed, will be displayed within the district during the summer 2025.

This year’s project features two Granny Block-styled barn quilts. A Granny Block Quilt consists of basic squares—in this case, 7 squares by 7 squares—which can be random coloring or patterned by color shade.

The barn quilt signs will be pre-painted with the base color for each 6-inch squared block. The community is invited to then draw the distinct calico pattern on each block.

Phase 1: Painting the basic squares:

Each square is taped at its edges and painted using acrylic paint. The first painting included 16 of the 49 blocks on each barn quilt.

Phase 2: Ready for Sealant!

Each square has been painted! Now for final touch-up and coating with a sealant to make ready for the community’s contribution: Adding design to each block for the final calico fabric image.
